The Mayor of London is the head of the Greater London Authority, responsible for the strategic governance of the capital. The role was established in 2000, with the Mayor elected every four years. The Mayor's duties include overseeing transport, policing, housing, and environmental policies. The current Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has been in office since May 2016, succeeding Boris Johnson. Khan, a member of the Labour Party, was re-elected in 2021 and again in 2024. His tenure has focused on issues such as affordable housing, public transport, and air quality. The Mayor works alongside the London Assembly, which scrutinises the Mayor's decisions and holds them to account.
